Firearms

This information is for current and potential firearm licence holders in Victoria. It outlines licence categories, licence requirements and other firearm related information.

The firearm industry in Victoria is regulated by the Firearms Act 1996.

All firearm owners and users must be licensed with the Licensing Services Division (LSD).

Stakeholder Communication Strategy

LSD is committed to creating a safer Victoria through responsible management of the firearm, private security and weapons industries.  LSD recognises the need to ensure that its level of service meets the reasonable requirements of its customers and stakeholders.  Accordingly, LSD proposes to develop stakeholder and business partner relationships that are based on timely, relevant and open communication, and are predicated on clear understanding of each parties' business focus and functions.

Licensing Services Division

The Licensing Services Division (LSD) administers the Firearms Act 1996. LSD is responsible for:

  • Issuing licences
  • Renewal of licences
  • Monitoring of licence holders
  • Issuing firearm permits
  • Firearm registration
  • Supporting operational policing 
  • Licensing firearm dealers
  • Accrediting handgun target shooting clubs
  • Accrediting handgun target shooting ranges
