‘What if we could do this a smarter way?’
To meet the changing demands of Service Delivery Principles, the Nexus Project links the new direction for policing in Victoria with government and non-government service providers.

Service Delivery Principles guide and support the manner in which policing services are locally managed and delivered to the community in Victoria.

This four-year research and innovation project between Victoria Police and Australian National University works in partnership with key service providers and community groups to address issues as diverse as indigenous, multicultural and youth affairs, sex offender recidivism, and public transport safety.

‘Nexus Policing – partnerships for safer communities’
A nexus is a hub, a gathering point; a connection associating two or more people or things, a centre of focus, and a bond or link.

Through Nexus, Victoria Police uses its community leadership role to bring agencies together to address safety issues.

How does it work?
A specific community safety issue has been identified for each Region, the Crime Department, and the Traffic and Transport Division.

Research is undertaken to 'map' the way Victoria Police, service providers and community groups coordinate and integrate their knowledge, skills and resources in addressing community safety.

This research informs the development of a strategic pilot model designed to achieve ‘smarter’ ways of promoting safety through partnerships and networks.

What are the issues?
A senior Victoria Police program manager represents each pilot site:
Region 1: City of Yarra – Safety in public housing
Region 2: City of  Wyndham – Family violence
Region 3: Mildura – Indigenous issues
Region 4: City of Wodonga – Youth safety
Region 5: City of Casey – Youth and multicultural issues
Traffic: Safety on public transport – Enhancing Capable Guardianship on public transport
Crime:  Sex offender recidivism – Justice system
