Firearm Licence Applications

This section outlines the different types of Firearm Licence Applications that can be applied for by an individual who must be a permanent resident of Australia and provide a Victorian residential address to obtain a Victorian Firearm Licence.

Firearms Safety Course Bookings - Each firearm licence application provides detailed information about whether you need to complete a firearm safety course (Refer to the instruction pages in the relevant firearm licence application). An application to attend a longarm firearm safety course will need to be forwarded to the Regional Firearms Office that services your area. For additional information on how to book in for a firearm safety course contact your local Regional Firearms Officer. Please refer to the download section on the right of this page where you will find the firearm safety course booking form, firearm safety code booklet and list of Regional Firearms Officers.

All application forms include detailed instructions. Please follow the instructions as any errors in your application may delay processing.

All completed applications and supporting documentation should be forwarded to the Licensing Services Division (LSD). Details for the LSD can be found at the end of this page.

Category A and B Longarm Licence - VP304A

This licence is held:

  • for sport or target shooting
  • for hunting
  • for primary production
  • to work in the security or prison industry
  • to be a firearms safety instructor
  • another official, commercial or prescribed purpose.

General Category Handgun and Category E Handguns - VP304B

This licence is held:

  • for target shooting
  • to work in the security or prison industry
  • to be a firearms safety instructor
  • another official, commercial or prescribed purpose.

Category C, D, E Longarms or Heirlooms Licence - VP321A

Category C licence is held for:

  • clay target shooting
  • clay target shooting possession on behalf of a junior licence holder
  • primary production
  • professional hunting
  • another official, commercial or prescribed purpose.

Category D licence is held for professional hunting.

Both Category D and E licences are held for other official, commercial or prescribed purposes.

An Heirloom Licence is held for owning an inherited single firearm or matched pair or firearms only.

Category 1 Firearm Collector's Licence, Category 2 Firearm Collector's Licence, Antique Handgun Collectors, and Ammunition Collector's Licence - VP321B

Category 1 Firearm Collectors Licence is held for collecting handguns made before 1 January, 1947, and longarms.

Category 2 Firearm Collectors Licence is held for collecting only handguns made after 1 January, 1947.

Antique Handgun Collectors Licence is held for collecting only handguns made before January, 1900.

Paintball Marker Licence - VP1268

This licence is held by persons who wish to hold paintball marker licence and own paintball markers. 

Please Note:  A licence is not require by persons simply wishing to participate in paintball gaming.

Interstate Paintball Marker Licence Holders
Interstate paintball marker licence holders who normally live interstate are deemed to be the holder of a corresponding licence in Victoria for the purpose of participating in paintball gaming activities under the Firearms Act 1996

Interstate paintball marker licence holders who intend to permanently reside in Victoria, can possess, carry and use a paintball marker for paintball gaming activities for a period of three months upon notification to the Chief Commissioner of their permanent residency in Victoria. An application for a Victorian Paintball Marker Licence will need to be made during this three month period.

Provisional General Category Handgun Licence - VP1285

A Provisional General Category Handgun Licence provides applicants with the ability to attain the preliminary requirement to qualify for a General Category Handgun Licence.

Junior Licence - VP325A

This licence is held by persons between the ages of 12 and 18 to carry or use Category A, B or C Longarms (being Shotguns) or General Category Handguns for the purpose of receiving instruction or engaging in sport or target shooting competitions.

Corporate Licence - VP305A

This licence is held by organisations wishing to:

  • become licensed to own and possess firearms for the lawful pursuit of the club
  • operate in the security and prison industry
  • engage in primary production
  • engage in professional hunting
  • another official, commercial or prescribed purpose.

Only organisations registered with the Australian Securities Commission, associations incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 or a similar Act from another state or government department, may apply for this licence.

Victorian Firearm Dealer Licence - VP302A

This licence is held by person and businesses wishing to carry on a business for the purpose of:

  • acquiring firearms, parts or ammunition
  • disposing of firearms, parts or ammunition
  • hiring firearms, parts or ammunition
  • lending firearms, parts or ammunition
  • transferring ownership of firearms, parts or ammunition
  • exposing or offering for sale any firearms, parts or ammunition
  • manufacturing or repairing any firearm or parts.
