Community Safety

The community safety section of the Victoria Police website provides informative safety tips and measures that you can take to ensure your safety. The site also provides the contact details of people who you can call for help and advice in a non-urgent situation.

Standard Emergency Warning Signal

The Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS) is a distinctive "wailing" siren which may be broadcast on radio, television, or public areas such as shopping centres or sports grounds. The use of SEWS is intended to attract the listener's attention prior to the broadcast of an important safety message.

Community Evacuation Information - Information about evacuating in the event of an emergency. 

Road safety

The road safety section touches on many aspects of driving and using Victoria's roads. Speed, alcohol and drugs, fatigue, seatbelts, mobile phones, what to do if the car breaks down, motorcycle safety, older drivers, young drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, trucks and heavy vehicles, and how to stay safe in your car are included. 

Home and property

This section provides general security tips, information about how to secure your home while on holidays, how to organise a safe party, tips to prevent your car being stolen and theft from your vehicle.

You can also download the Victoria Police Residental Information Kit. This includes a number of crime prevention tips and other safety information.
 

Your schools and neighbourhood

Here you will find information about safety while in and around your neighbourhood, safety houses and tips for children walking to school.

The Student Safety brochure highlights safety when driving, in your home, on the street and on public transport. There are tips to help you develop a safety plan.
 

Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Teams (SOCIT)

Here you will find information for victims of sexual assault or child abuse

Personal, child and family

In this section you will find information about fraud, drink spiking, family violence, preventing homophobic crime, racial and religious vilification, identity theft, and advice for older Victorians.

Business and local councils

Find information about securing your business with the Business Security Kit, preventing armed robbery and inform your staff about things they can do to ensure their personal safety at work.
