What do we do?
The function of the Aboriginal Advisory Unit (AAU) is to provide a full-time facility to further improve the good relationships that exist between Victoria Police and Victorian Aboriginal Communities.
The AAU aims to:
- Advise police on operational issues affecting indigenous people.
- Coordinate management and statewide delivery of the Aboriginal Community Justice Panel Program.
- Be responsible for liaison between police and organisations associated with a representative of Indigenous people.
- Drive the implementation of the Aboriginal Community Liaison Officers (ACLOs) Program.
- Provide liaison between investigating police and indigenous people.
- Advise Indigenous people on police practice and procedures.
- Coordinate the roles and functions of the Police Aboriginal Liaison Officers.
- Coordinate and conduct lectures at recruit police training.
The role and function of the AAU is to:
- Address historical and cultural indigenous issues.
- Address traditional, transitional and contemporary indigenous lifestyles,
indigenous/police relationships and topical issues of concern to police.
- Represent Victoria Police on the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement Working Group.
- Represent Victoria Police at seminars, conferences and interdepartmental meetings on indigenous issues.
- Maintain a resource centre on indigenous issues for use by police.
- Provide an advisory service to police command on Indigenous matters.
- Keep abreast of current indigenous issues, research, and where possible address future problem areas.
