Students and international visitors

Victoria, and its capital city Melbourne is a safe and welcoming place, for individuals, families and international visitors.

Victoria Police provides a 24-hour free service to the Victorian community.

Crime prevention and safety tips

You can be prepared and reduce your chance of being a victim of crime. Victoria Police has produced a Residential Crime Prevention Information Kit containing a variety of factsheets on crime prevention.
The kit includes information relating to a number of themes and topics - such as residential burglaries, theft, family violence, fraud, vehicle safety and property damage.

Information about keeping safe when in public and at major events is also available here.

Understanding how to report crime

If you have been a victim of crime, visit your closest police station where you can speak directly to a member of Victoria Police.

More information on how to report a crime is available in the Reporting Crime: your rights (PDF) easy English resource which caters for low literacy in English.

This resource explains:

  • what a crime is
  • how to report a crime
  • what happens after a crime is reported
  • where to get more help.

If you are in danger or in an emergency, call police immediately by calling Triple Zero ('000').

Information and resources for victims of crime

The Victims Support Agency (VSA) within the Department of Justice represents victims of crime and coordinates services for victims.

The website outlines where you can get the help you need, learn about your rights and entitlements, and access useful publications.
