Man charged with reckless conduct following Port Melbourne firework incident

Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested and charged a man allegedly responsible for discharging a firework at a man in a wheelchair in Port Melbourne earlier this year.

The incident, which allegedly occurred on The Boulevard in Port Melbourne at about 10.40pm on Sunday 8 January, left the 38-year-old victim hospitalised with serious burns to his legs.

The victim was waiting in his wheelchair on the middle median strip of The Boulevard to cross the road when a car pulled up adjacent to him, discharging a firework in his direction.

The victim was struck, with a member of the public assisting the victim who was taken to hospital where he was treated for serious burns and released a week later.

An extensive investigation led detectives to execute a search warrant at a residential address in East Cornhill Drive, Point Cook on Monday 27 February where they arrested a 19-year-old Point Cook man.

He has been charged with reckless conduct causing serious injury, recklessly cause injury, possess an explosive substance, criminal damage by fire.

He has been bailed to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 4 April.
