Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a single vehicle collision in Springvale South last night.

The accident occurred at about 12:30 am at the intersection of Westall Road and Springvale Road.

Investigators believe that a Mazda 626 was being driven by a 20-year-old Hampton Park man along Westall Road.

Police believe that the driver has been unaware of the approaching intersection with Springvale Road, driven through and collided with a pole.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

His passenger, a 21-year-old Hampton woman, was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious but non-life-threatening condition.

Investigators are preparing a report for the coroner.
