A man has been charged after allegedly driving double the speed limit and evading officers in Chelsea Heights overnight.
Moorabbin Highway Patrol officers spotted a silver Volkswagen Passat allegedly travelling at a fast rate of speed north along Mornington Peninsula Freeway about 2.10am.
It is alleged the vehicle, with five people onboard, was detected at 200km/h in a 100km/h zone.
Officers attempted to intercept the vehicle which allegedly evaded police, continuing to drive before coming to a stop on Springvale Road in Braeside.
The allegedly unlicensed 22-year-old driver was arrested.
He has since been charged with traffic offences including dangerous driving, reckless conduct endangering life, excessive speed and unlicensed driving.
The Wantirna man was bailed to appear before the Moorabbin Justice Centre on 22 June.
The Volkswagen was impounded for a period of 28 days at a cost $1,121.
The detection forms part of Operation Arid, a statewide road policing operation conducted over the Labour Day long weekend.
Police will be highly visible and enforcing in an effort to reduce road trauma, targeting speeding, impaired driving, fatigue and distraction offences.
The operation commenced on Friday 6 March and runs until 11:59pm on Monday 9 March.
