Bendigo Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding a stabbing in Bendigo overnight.

Emergency services were called to the scene following reports an injured man stumbled into a sports bar on Hargreaves Street on Thursday 4 June about 9pm.

The 41-year-old was treated by ambulance paramedics on scene before he was taken to hospital with suspected stab wounds in a serious condition.

At this stage it is believed the victim, who has been living on the streets, was set upon by up to six offenders following an altercation in Bath Lane.

It appears the man made his way from the laneway to the sports bar and sought assistance after the offenders, who are believed to be teenagers, fled the scene.

Local detectives and police canvassed CCTV, have spoken with witnesses and are appealing for anyone who has not yet spoken to police to come forward.

A search of the area failed to find those involved.

The investigation remains ongoing, and it is expected detectives will revisit the area in the morning.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit an online confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
