Detectives from the Major Drug Squad have today charged two men as part of their investigation into the discovery of a large quantity of drugs, cash, firearms and explosives in a short-term rental in Keilor East in January.

Police will allege the property was an organised crime drug and weapons cache ‘safe house’.

Two search warrants were executed on Wednseday morning (13 May) at residential addresses in St Albans and Point Cook.

Items seized included:

  • Approximately 1kg cannabis
  • Approximately two ounces of cocaine
  • Approximately $3k of cash
  • Mobile phones and electronic devices
  • A Mercedes Benz vehicle

A 29-year-old St Albans man was charged with:

  • Traffick large commercial quantity of cocaine
  • Traffick large commercial quantity of methylamphetamine
  • Traffick firearms
  • Possess/traffick explosives
  • Possess body armour (ballistic vest)
  • Possess stolen goods
  • Possess proceeds of crime

The man was remanded in custody and appeared before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

A 27-year-old Point Cook man was charged with:

  • Traffick cocaine
  • Possess cocaine
  • Traffick cannabis
  • Possess cannabis
  • Possess proceeds of crime

He was bailed to appear at Wyndham Magistrates’ Court on 11 June.

Yesterday's activity follows an incident where police were called around 11.30am on 24 January after a cleaner attended the Belle Vista address, locating a significant amount of illicit drugs, firearms, explosives and cash in excess of $2 million at the premises.

At least 100kg of cocaine and methylamphetamine with a street value of $25M were seized at the address.

During a police search of the property, a number of incendiary devices were located, and the Bomb Response Unit and Australian Defence Force were called.

Controlled detonations occurred and the devices were rendered safe.

The property had been booked for a number of weeks in January. Investigators interviewed a 19-year-old man from Hallam in relation to the booking and released him pending further enquiries.

As part of their investigation, detectives identified a white Toyota Camry hire vehicle which travelled to the address a number of times throughout the time it was rented.

The Camry was seized by police on 24 January and has since been returned to the hire company.

Quotes attributable to Detective Inspector Jamie Walker, Major Drug Squad:

“As I have said before, this was not a run of the mill seizure of drugs and cash – there were incendiary devices and large quantities of firearms and illicit substances.

“Victoria Police has zero tolerance for illicit drugs being brought into our community and will continue to hold offenders to account that do so.”
