Copper theft plot foiled by police in Moonee Ponds

Five men have been arrested and charged following an alleged attempted copper theft in Moonee Ponds this morning.

Officers were called after a witness spotted flashlight beams coming from the grandstand of a racecourse on Feehan Avenue about 1.30am.

Upon attendance, officers located two men inside a bistro area.

The men tried to flee through the back tunnels of the racecourse, but police gave chase and arrested the pair.

Officers then spotted a third man standing near the entrance, just inside the venue.

Police searched the man’s car which was parked nearby, and an located an amount of 1,4-butanediol and methamphetamine.

Another vehicle, a white Mitsubishi, was located bearing false plates parked just inside the racecourse.

The remaining two men were located and arrested with the assistance of the Air Wing as they attempted to flee on foot towards Thomas Street.

The quintet was interviewed and have since been charged.

A 47-year-old Wangaratta man was charged with burglary, theft, going equipped to steal, use false document, possess meth and possess 1,4-butendoil.

He was bailed to appear before Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on 24 April 2026.

A 45-year-old Wangaratta man was charged with burglary, attempted theft and going equipped to steal.

He was bailed to appear before Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on 24 April 2026.

A 48-year-old Epping man was charged with burglary, attempted theft and possess methamphetamine.

He was bailed to appear before Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on 24 April 2026.

A 41-year-old Melton West man was charged with burglary, attempted theft and going equipped to steal.

He was bailed to appear before Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on 22 January 26.

A 32-year-old Altona Meadows man was charged with burglary, attempted theft, possess controlled weapon and going equipped to steal.

He was bailed to appear before Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on 24 April 2026.
