Detectives investigate hotel fire in South Melbourne

Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding a suspicious hotel fire in South Melbourne this morning.

Emergency services were called to the York Street scene following reports two offenders had forced their way into the hotel about 3am.

Detectives have been told the pair were seen carrying jerry cans before the licensed premises was set alight.

The duo left the area in a vehicle headed north on Northumberland Street.

Police and detectives attended the scene and a crime scene was established.

It is expected an arson chemist and detectives will revisit the scene today.
