Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man after two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle outside the Melbourne Showgrounds in Ascot Vale yesterday afternoon.

Three male pedestrians were leaving a comic convention when a blue Toyota Echo sedan allegedly mounted a kerb on Langs Road and struck two of the men just before 5pm.

One of the pedestrians, a 20-year-old Keysborough man, died at the scene.

The second, a 20-year-old man, remains in hospital with significant lower body injuries.

The third pedestrian, a 20-year-old man, managed to avoid being struck but was taken to hospital for observation.

It’s alleged the Toyota continued east along the footpath, before a female off-duty police officer and member of the public intervened and conducted a citizen’s arrest.

The alleged driver, 33-year-old man Werribee man, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and culpable driving.

The unlicensed learner driver will appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing and further charges are anticipated.
