Members from the Special Operations Group, Critical Incident Response Team and Melbourne Police have swiftly arrested a man armed with a firearm, following two aggravated carjackings in Tarneit and North Melbourne this morning.

The Police Air Wing was integral in tracking the alleged offender after the first carjacking, with specialist and frontline police officers rapidly apprehending him on Crossley Street in the CBD at about 9am – around an hour after the first incident occurred.

It’s alleged the man attended a convenience store at the intersection of Sayers and Tarneit roads after the vehicle he was driving ran out of petrol about 7.45am.

The man is alleged to have approached the attendant at the convenience store, taking a jerry can and attempting to obtain fuel before assaulting him and fleeing on foot.

The attendant sustained minor injuries.

Armed with a firearm, it is alleged the man approached a silver Honda Civic at the intersection of Sayers and Tarneit Roads. He pointed the firearm at the occupant and demanded the vehicle. The occupant refused and ran to a nearby store. A secondary vehicle being a white Mitsubishi ASX wagon was stopped behind this at the intersection of Sayers and Tarneit roads.

The alleged offender made demands for the vehicle, pointing a firearm at the victim’s head before taking off in the car.

The driver was not physically injured.

The Police Air Wing tracked the stolen vehicle driving erratically, before the alleged offender got out of the vehicle on Dryburgh Street in North Melbourne.

There, he allegedly carjacked another person at gunpoint – stealing their silver Hyundai sedan.

This vehicle was eventually dumped on Lonsdale Street just after 8.45am, with specialist and tactical members from the Special Operations Group and Critical Incident Response Team quickly arresting a 48-year-old man from Hoppers Crossing on Crossley Street – following a brief foot chase.

The man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A firearm was seized, and the man is set to be interviewed by detectives later this morning.

Quotes attributable to Detective Senior Sergeant Luke Flint, Officer in Charge, Wyndham Criminal Investigation Unit:

“As soon as this incident was reported, we had a significant and immediate response that ultimately ended with elite tactical operators from the Special Operations Group and Critical Incident Response Team quickly taking a male with a firearm into our custody.

“These units received exemplary support from the Police Air Wing who ensured our officers on the ground, which also included other frontline police and investigative units, were perfectly aligned to execute a quick arrest.

“This coordinated response led to the matter being resolved within an hour, and thankfully, no serious injuries to members of the public or police.

“However, it must be acknowledged there were alleged victims and witnesses who will be significantly impacted by this.

“Victorians deserve to feel safe in their own community and we will continue to do everything possible to prevent crime from occurring and when it unfortunately does happen, bring an abrupt end to offending so no one else is harmed.”
