Fast responding police units arrest man within moments of South Yarra armed robbery

A man has been charged and a multi-tool knife has been seized after an attempted armed robbery in South Yarra last night.

Officers swiftly responded to reports of an armed robbery at a supermarket on Toorak Road about 9.15pm.

It is alleged a man walked into the supermarket brandishing a multi-tool knife, pointed it at a staff member and demanded cigarettes.

The same man allegedly plunged the knife into a countertop multiple times before smashing an EFTPOS machine.

The man allegedly left the store soon after.

There were no reported physical injuries.

Responding Prahan, Malvern and Transit police units swiftly descended on the location and arrested a man nearby.

A multi-tool knife was seized.

A 40-year-old man has been charged with attempted armed robbery, criminal damage, theft (shop-steal), possessing a controlled weapon and bail offences.

He is remanded in custody to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
