Five youths charged after serious assault in Sunshine

Brimbank Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged five youths after a man sustained critical injuries following an assault in Sunshine yesterday.

Three boys aged 12, 13 and 15 years-old from the Brimbank area, a 14-year-old girl from the Banyule area and a 14-year-old girl from the Brimbank area were all charged with affray, violent disorder, intentionally cause serious injury and intentionally cause injury.

The charges follow an incident on Hampshire Road just after 2pm where a 60-year-old man sustained critical injuries after he was set-upon by youths after they allegedly attempted to steal items from a nearby store.

The victim, who was working nearby, is alleged to have come to the aid of a nearby shop employee who was involved in a scuffle in the street over the alleged stolen items.

The man was transported to hospital in a critical condition.

Protective Service Officers and members from Transit Safey Division arrested four teens nearby. The 12-year-old boy was arrested later that evening at his home address.

All five are expected to appear before a Weekend Online Remand Court later today where investigators will seek their remand.
