Man arrested after assault on tram

Police have arrested a man following an alleged assault on a tram in Melbourne on Saturday evening.

Transit Safety Division officers have been told a man approached another man and woman on a Route 72 tram near the intersection of St Kilda Road and Coventry Street about 6.50pm.

It is alleged the offender was behaving erratically before producing a small steak knife.

The man and woman attempted to calm the man down but he produced a hammer and hit the victims a number of times.

They managed to hold him down until police arrived and took a 37-year-old man from St Kilda into custody.

He is currently assisting police with their enquires.

A 48-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman, both from Doreen, suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital for observations.
