Man charged after million-dollar scam and false cancer claims

Horsham Family Violence Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man after he allegedly fooled family into thinking he had cancer and deceiving them into handing over more than $1 million.

A man allegedly used the profits of a family home sale in Alfredton, without telling his partner.

It is alleged that the man attempted to hide the missing funds by claiming he had made an investment and was set to receive a $2 million profit.

When the $2 million couldn’t be produced, the man allegedly concocted a story involving him being given a cancer diagnosis and a victim of fraud.

It is alleged that the man deceived family members into handing over an additional $1.2 million, creating false email accounts and impersonating two different lawyers, to back up his claims.

Police allege that the same man used of a fraudulent document to obtain a new car from a Horsham dealership to the value of $69,830.

A 30-year-old Western Australian man was arrested in Ararat on 8 July 2024.

Following a lengthy investigation, the man was charged with 28 offences including 10 counts of obtain property by deception and 13 counts of make a false document.

He will appear before the Horsham Magistrates’ Court on 25 June.
