Man charged following series of carjackings

Police have charged a 48-year-old man from Hoppers Crossing with a number of offences following incidents in Tarneit, North Melbourne and the Melbourne CBD this morning.

It is alleged a man was assaulted at a convenience store at the intersection of Sayers and Tarneit roads about 7.45am.

The offender left the store and approached a silver Honda Civic at the intersection of Sayers and Tarneit Roads and attempted to steal the vehicle but was unsuccessful.

It is alleged he then carjacked a white Mitsubishi ASX.

The car was followed to Dryburgh Street, North Melbourne where it is alleged a silver Hyundai was carjacked.

The Hyundai was dumped on Lonsdale Street about 8.45am and a man ran from the vehicle.

Police, including officers from Special Operations Group and Critical Incident Response Team arrested the man following a brief foot chase.

He has been charged with attempted aggravated burglary, attempted aggravated carjacking, aggravated carjacking with imitation firearm, non-prohibited person possess imitation firearm, assault and threats to kill.

He has been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 15 October.
