Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Pakenham this afternoon.
At about 1230pm today, officers attended the Toomuc Valley Road property as part of an ongoing investigation by Cardinia Crime Investigation.
Critical Incident Response Team members cordoned off the area and attempted to contact the man without success.
Officers then heard what they believed to be a gun shot from inside the residence.
Police forced entry to the home and located the 40-year-old man unresponsive.
Police suspect the man shot himself.
There were no other people inside the house.
He was immediately provided with medical assistance and ambulance paramedics were called; however the man could not be revived.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as per standard practice when a person dies in police presence or in police custody.
