Steven Chidgey - Police Custody Officer

Steven Chidgey: So what I liked about the training was everyday was different. You mixed it up really well, you did laws in the mornings or DT in the afternoon, which is just training, self-defence tactics, use of spray and batons. And then other days you work in the cells where you do the whole how to approach cells.

Every day was different.

Another thing I really enjoyed was the observation weeks, where you really got a good insight if the job was for you. Where you get to spend a week out in the actual station where you applied for, and you really get to see hands on. And in the second week it really starts merging in where all the law and everything else you’ve learned really starts moulding in.

With Victoria Police, it’s just a secure career. It’s going to be around forever, it has been for God knows how long now.

Shift work is fantastic, you work with a great community and the members are fantastic. Everyone is just glad that you are there and glad to help each other out. You get to work with a great bunch of people, every day is going to be different and you learn a new task that you thought you would never do, and you can see all the behind the scenes that no one thinks about. And you come across just great members to help you out through the day.

I am looking forward to this career.
