Flemington police have arrested two men following a firearms incident in Essendon overnight.
Officers were first called to reports of two men suspiciously loitering on Keilor Road about 1.15am.
It is understood that when police arrived on scene, one of the men attempted to flee.
Officers gave chase on foot, and when the man dropped a backpack, he was swiftly arrested.
Investigators searched the bag, before locating and seizing a firearm.
The pair have since been interviewed in relation to the incident.
One of the men, a 50-year-old from Kensington, has been charged with possessing an unregistered handgun and failing to answer bail.
He was remanded to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 26 May.
The second man, a 40-year-old from Moonee Ponds, has been released pending further enquiries.
