A P1 probationary driver has lost his car and will be facing serious charges after allegedly being clocked at nearly 200km/h in Dingley Village yesterday evening.

Officers from Moorabbin Highway Patrol detected the Ford Falcon allegedly travelling along the Mornington Peninsula Freeway at 198km/h in the 100 km/h zone, about 7.30pm.

The driver, a 19-year-old Frankston South man, was intercepted and interviewed in relation to conduct endangering life, dangerous driving and other traffic offences.

His vehicle was impounded for a period of 30 days at a cost of $1,002.

A Ford Falcon gets pulled onto the back of a tow truck. A police car sits behind it with its lights activated.

He is expected to be charged on summons to appear before a magistrates’ court at a later date.

This intercept forms part of Operation Regal, which will see police ramp up enforcement across the state in an effort to drive down road trauma.

It follows a terrible period on our roads which saw 36 lives lost during May – the worst May for fatalities on record in over 20 years, since 2004.

Operation Regal starts at 00:01 hours on Friday 6 June and ends at 23:59 hours on Monday 9 June 2025.
