Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad are continuing to appeal for public assistance following a series of incidents which appear to be linked to hospitality venues across inner metropolitan Melbourne.

There have been a number of arsons and attempted arsons across the Melbourne CBD, South Melbourne and Prahran entertainment precincts.

This includes a factory fire at an alcohol distribution centre on Atlantic Drive in Keysborough last night, which is now being investigated by detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad.

There have also been two kidnappings which police believe at this stage may be linked to the series.

Specialist detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad and Armed Crime Squad are continuing to work with regional detectives in an effort to determine the motivation for the incidents and who may be involved, as well as any potential links between the incidents.

A number of arrests have been made in relation to the incidents, and investigators would like to thank the members of the public who have seen something suspicious and subsequently reported it.

Police continue to have an increased presence in both an overt and a covert capacity throughout these entertainment precincts. This will be further bolstered over the weekend.

Victoria Police has engaged stakeholders from the liquor industry who are assisting police with the investigation.

We urge anyone who witnesses any suspicious activity in the vicinity of licensed premises to contact Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Anyone with other information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Quotes attributable to Detective Inspector Chris Murray, Arson and Explosives Squad:

“At this stage, the motive for the incidents remains unclear. We have not had any reported extortions from any of the owners of the venues which have been subjected to arson or attempted arson.

“Our specialist investigators are still working to determine a link between the incidents.

“I’d also like to thank the members of the public who have seen something suspicious and have called it in – we have been able to charge offenders and bring them before the courts because of these actions.

“I’d implore anyone with any information – including those who work in the industry – to come forward and speak to police with any information you may have.”
