A driver and his passenger are in hospital after the stolen vehicle they were travelling in crashed in Hadfield this morning.

Fawkner police observed a grey Toyota Corolla bearing false registration plates travelling north along West Street about 4am.

As officers pulled up behind the vehicle to conduct further checks, the driver drove-off at a fast rate of speed.

Officers pulled over to the side of the road and a short time later observed the vehicle had lost control and rolled onto its roof, crashing into a power pole at the intersection of Glenroy Road.

Both men, aged 22, were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening-injuries.

A search of the vehicle located two jerry cans of fuel in the back seat.

Further checks revealed the vehicle to be stolen from Dandenong on 10 December.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has CCTV/dash cam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
