Fawkner Highway Patrol are appealing for public assistance following a hit-run collision that left a pedestrian with serious injuries in Brunswick yesterday.

Police have been told a woman was crossing Sydney Road near Barkley Street and had stopped in the middle of the road to wait for traffic to clear about 4.15pm.

It is believed a small white Volkswagen hatch travelling north hit the woman and failed to stop, continued along Sydney Road where the driver pulled over near Wilson Avenue and was last seen walking towards the railway station.

A 71-year-old Brunswick woman was taken to hospital where she remains with serious injuries.

Police seized the vehicle and are yet to locate and speak to the driver.

The driver is described as being aged in his 20s with dark hair and was wearing a black jacket and black shorts with a red stripe.

Investigators will release CCTV of a man that may be able to assist with their enquiries and are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
