Police are investigating a serious assault outside a residence in St Kilda earlier this year.

Investigators have been told a woman approached an unknown man who was sitting outside her residence on Grey Street just after 2pm on 10 February.

A verbal argument took place as the male refused to leave the front of her property, and the woman struck the male to the head.

The man retaliated by swinging his toolbox at the woman striking her in the head twice with the toolbox before punching her multiple times to the face.

The man then left on foot.

The 55-year-old woman was taken to hospital and treated for concussion and a large laceration to the rear of her head.

The male is perceived to be of middle eastern appearance, around 30-years-old, with a dark beard and a tattoo of an owl on his left calf.

He was wearing a black cap, yellow high-vis t-shirt, khaki shorts and black shoes.

Investigators have released images of a male they believe can assist with their enquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
