Declaration of Designated Area under section 10D of the Control of Weapons Act 1990 (Vic)
The Assistant Commissioner, Western Region, acting as a delegate of the Chief Commissioner of Police, has declared under section 10D(1)(a) of the Control of Weapons Act 1990 Vic (the Act) the below location as a designated area.
The declared designated area will be in effect from 10.00am on 10 July 2026 to 10.00pm on 10 July 2026 inclusive.
Designated Area
The area that is declared to be a designated area is all public places within and around the Geelong Central Business District, Eastern Beach foreshore and associated piers and carparks and public transport hubs Geelong Railway Station and Moorabool Street bus terminals, Geelong, being the area bordered by (and inclusive of):
- intersection of Princes Highway (Latrobe Terrace) and McKillop Street (Bellarine Highway), east to intersection of McKillop Street and Bellarine Street
- north from McKillop Street and Bellarine Street to intersection of Bellarine Street and Myers Street
- east from intersection of Bellarine Street and Myers Street to intersection of Myers Street and Swanston Street
- north from intersection of Myers Street and Swanston Street to intersection of Swanston Street and Eastern Beach Road
- east from intersection of Swanston Street and Eastern Beach Road to intersection of Eastern Beach Road and Hearne Parade
- north and east along Hearne Parade to the walking path from Hearne Parade to Eastern Beach foreshore
- west from the Eastern Beach Lifesavers bollards along Eastern Beach foreshore, including Eastern Beach Promenade, all public areas of Royal Geelong Yacht Club to, and including, Cunningham Pier
- north from Cunningham Pier along Western Foreshore Road to Bob McGovern Path
- north along Bob McGovern Path to intersection of Western Beach Road and Ginn Street
- south-west from intersection of Western Beach Road and Ginn Street to intersection of Ginn Street underpass and Princes Highway (Latrobe Terrace) overpass
- south from intersection of Ginn Street underpass and Princes Highway (Latrobe Terrace) overpass to intersection of Princes Highway (Latrobe Terrace) and McKillop Street, including Geelong Railway Station and associated car parking areas.

Victoria Police powers in designated areas
Police officers and protective services officers (PSOs) are empowered to stop and search a person and any thing in the possession or control of the person, or a vehicle, for weapons under the Act. This may include:
- a search via electronic device
- a search of the contents of pockets /bag
- an outer search, or
- a strip search.
Police officers and PSOs may seize and detain any item reasonably suspected of being a weapon. Police officers may also require a person who is to be subject to a strip search to disclose their identity.
A police officer may, exercising their power under the Act, direct a person to leave the designated area if:
- where a person is wearing a face covering, the police officer reasonably believes they are using the face covering primarily to conceal their identity or to protect themselves from the effects of crowd-controlling substances, and the person refuses to remove the face covering when requested by the police officer to do so, or
- the police officer reasonably believes that the person intends to engage in conduct that would constitute an offence under s.195H (affray) or s.195I (violent disorder) of the Crimes Act 1958.
It is an offence under the Act, without reasonable excuse:
- to obstruct or hinder a police officer or PSO in the exercise of a power to stop and search a person or vehicle or to seize and detain a thing, or
- to fail to comply with a lawful direction given by a police officer to leave the designated area.
