A 19-year-old man was detected driving at more than 100km/h through Ballarat’s suburban streets last night.
A speeding Toyota Kluger drew the attention of Ballarat Highway Patrol members travelling along Sturt Street, near the intersection of Drummond Street, about 11.20pm.
They intercepted the vehicle after registering an alleged speed of 106km/h in a 60km/h zone.
When asked why the man was in such a hurry, he advised he was just keen to get home.
He can expect to be charged on summons with speed dangerous and exceeding the speed limit by 45km/h or more.
His trips home will now take even longer on public transport after police seized his vehicle for 30 days at a cost of $1405.
Ballarat Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Ben Hay said there was no excuse to be travelling at such high speeds.
“Speed limits are set for a reason so to be travelling at more than 100km/h through a residential area is extremely dangerous,” he said.
“Adding in the terrible weather conditions last night and this could have ended in disaster if the driver had lost control on the wet roads.
“Motorists need to ensure they drive to the weather conditions and stick to the designated speed limits for the safety of all road users.”
