A driver has lost his licence and had his vehicle impounded outside Box Hill Police Station this morning.

Police were conducting random breath testing outside the police station on Kangerong Road about 10.30am.

Officers waved in the 35-year-old driver who returned a positive breath test.

The driver then produced an alleged evidentiary breath test reading of 0.177, more than three times the legal limit.

The reading amounted to an immediate loss of licence for 12 months and the vehicle will be impounded for 30 days at cost of $999.52.

The 35-year-old Melbourne man will be charged on summons for drink driving.

It comes as Victoria Police launches Operation Furlong, a statewide road policing operation taking place over the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

Motorists can expect to see police highly visible and enforcing across the state’s roads in an effort to reduce road trauma.

There will be a significant focus on major roads heading to areas in regional Victoria, with police on the lookout for speeding and distraction offences.

Motorists should expect to be tested anywhere, any time for alcohol and drugs, with significant penalties in place for those caught driving while impaired.

Operation Furlong commences at 12:01am on Friday 31 October and concludes at 11:59pm on Tuesday 4 November.
