Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad have charged two men as part of their investigation into a theft and arson on an ATM in Melbourne’s CBD last month.
A 40-year-old Brunswick man was charged on Friday (29 May) with theft, use explosive and conduct endangering life.
He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 24 August.
A 40-year-old Brunswick West man was arrested this morning. The man attempted to flee and was subsequently tasered and taken into custody.
He has since been charged with over 20 charges, including:
- cause explosion likely to cause serious injury to property
- reckless conduct endangering life
- drive in a manner dangerous
- theft of motor vehicle
- evade police
The man appeared before the Bail and Remand Court this evening and was remanded in custody to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 24 August.
The charges follow an incident where three people allegedly caused an explosion to gain access to an ATM on Victoria Street about 2.45am on 13 May.
The homemade device ignited in the face of one of the men, leaving him with serious and life changing injuries.
Police will allege approximately $5000 was stolen from the ATM.
It is believed the trio fled the scene on foot, before the injured man was located a short time later on Peel Street.
He was conveyed to hospital to be treated for serious facial injuries.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The incident is not linked to Operation Eclipse.
