Two charged as part of sporting integrity investigation

Detectives from the Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit have charged two people as part of an investigation into alleged cheating at gambling during the A League soccer season.

Warrants were executed in Richmond, West Melbourne and Kingsville from 6.20am on Friday, 30 May.

A 24-year-old West Melbourne man and a 27-year-old Kingsville man were arrested and interviewed by police.

The West Melbourne man has been charged with 10 offences including engaging in conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome of an event or event contingency (x4), facilitating conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome of an event or event contingency (x4), use of corrupt conduct information for betting purposes and attempting to commit an indictable offence.

The Kingsville man has been charged with 16 offences including use of corrupt conduct information for betting purposes (x11), facilitating conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome of event or event contingency (x4) and attempting to commit an indictable offence.

The pair have been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 31 July.

Police will allege four matches in April and May 2025 have been the subject of player to be carded wagering manipulation.

Detectives from the Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit have also been working closely with Football Australia as part of this investigation.
