There's no place for hate in our community

Deputy Commissioner Timothy Hansen explains Victoria Police’s response to hate crime, racial vilification, discrimination and hate-based behaviour, and how police are working to keep Victorian communities safe.

Video transcript

Deputy Commissioner Timothy Hansen: "Victoria Police condemns all forms of racial vilification and hate based behaviour.

"There is no place in Victoria for acts that target people because of their faith, culture, background, or identity.

"Strong, connected communities are central to a safe and inclusive Victoria. Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and able to participate in community life.

"Victoria Police is committed to protecting the safety of all Victorians. We will continue to work with communities and partner agencies to prevent harm and take firm action against those who commit crime, holding offenders to account.

"We encourage anyone who experiences or witnesses vilification, hate related behaviour or acts that divide our communities or make people feel unsafe to report them through existing Victoria Police channels.

"Interpreter services are available where required and victims can be connected with appropriate support services.

"Criminal offences will be investigated. Offenders held to account and victims connected with the support they need.

"We can build a Victoria where people of all faiths, cultures and backgrounds can live, work, socialise and practice their faith without fear.

"Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and fairness."
