New Application Processing Times

Application processing times vary depending on the type of application and the requirements of the application. A minimum 28 day waiting period from the date we receive your application is applied to all new licence and first permit to acquire applications. This waiting period is also applied when you apply for a new category of licence when you hold a current licence.

All applications go through a robust assessment process and as such, processing times may extend beyond that 28 day waiting period. Ensuring that you have completed your application in full and in line with the instructions provided with the application form will help avoid uneccessary delays.

Should you wish to know the progress of your application you can email us with your full name, address, date of birth and the type of application you have made and we will assist if we can. Please note that we will not disclose details of any applications made by any individual to anyone other than the applicant.

Renewal Applications

Renewal applications can be submitted by email in PDF format.

All renewal applications must:

  • Be completed in full, including answering all medical and previous history questions and acknowledgements.

  • Be accompanied by a signed list of firearms registered to you (provided with your renewal pack) even if you do not own any firearms.

  • Include documentary evidence of genuine need for each reason on your licence.

More information regarding genuine need requirements can be found here.

Should you need to provide a medical report with your application please refer to the Quick Guide to Role of Health Professionals in the Firearm Licensing Process which can be found here.
