Our role and functions
The role of Victoria Police is to serve the Victorian community and uphold the law to promote a safe, secure, and orderly society. We achieve this through our functions of:
- protecting life and property
- helping those in need of assistance
- preventing offences
- preserving the peace
- detecting and apprehending offenders.
Our role and functions are set out in the Victoria Police Act 2013.
Our services
Presence
- Highly visible policing – more street than station
- Intelligence informed policing
- Proactive policing activities aimed at harm reduction
- Community engagement with a focus on victims, priority groups and those at risk.
Prevention
- Deterrence, early intervention through partnerships and community safety initiatives
- Disrupting, preventing and detecting crime
- Regulatory services that prevent harm through education, compliance and enforcement activities.
Response
- Responding to emergencies, critical incidents and major events
- Investigating and prosecuting crime
- Victim support and offender management.

Policing operates in complex, dynamic environments, responding simultaneously to the needs of communities, victims, offenders, and partners while working closely with the community and a broad range of service recipients to ensure efficient, effective, economical, and timely delivery on objectives and priorities.
Our stakeholders include Victorian Government departments and agencies, peak bodies representing communities and specific community safety issues, partner organisations supporting our work, local communities and their representatives, academia, subject matter experts, and oversight bodies.
