Communication assistance

How to contact us if you are Deaf, hard of hearing, nonspeaking, have difficulty with speech or communication, or if English is your second language.

Victoria Police offers several options for getting in touch or reporting a crime. If you are Deaf, hard of hearing, have difficulty with speech, or if English is not your first language, here's how you can reach us.

If you are Deaf, hard of hearing, or nonspeaking, explore the different ways you can contact us either in an emergency, or in a non-urgent situation.

106 Text Emergency Relay service

People with a speech or hearing impairment can dial the One Zero Six (106) Text Emergency Relay Service, directly through a TTY (also known as a teletypewriter or textphone), The toll free service is available 24 hours a day in an emergency.

Emergency services cannot be contacted using the Short Message Service (SMS) on your mobile telephone

The National Relay Service (NRS)

If you are Deaf, hard of hearing or nonspeaking, you can use the National Relay Service (NRS) to contact Victoria Police.

Emergency Triple Zero (000) calls through the NRS

To make an emergency services call using the NRS, visit National Relay Service (NRS) for a range of call options.

Non-urgent Police Assistance Line calls through the NRS

To report a non-urgent crime or event to our Police Assistance Line:

  1. register or sign into the National Relay Service (NRS), and
  2. provide the number 131 444.

English as a second language community

If English is your second language, there are different ways you can contact us.

Emergency Triple Zero (000) calls in other languages

If you can't speak English you can call Triple Zero (000) from a fixed line and ask for 'Police'. Once connected you need to stay on the link and a translator will be organised.

You can make a non-urgent report in your language through an interpreter.

Call the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) on 131 450(opens in a new window) and ask for the Victoria Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
