A supported pathway into policing

You do not need to have everything worked out yet.

We're here to help you understand what policing is like, ask questions, and get ready to apply along the way.

Benefits of the Career Starter Pathway

The Career Starter Pathway offers:

  • a supported start towards a rewarding policing career
  • support from Victoria Police Recruitment and experienced police officers
  • time to prepare, learn about fitness, understand recruitment requirements, and get your probationary driver’s licence before you start
  • a career with purpose, where you can help people, build life skills, and make a difference in the community.

If your application is successful, you can begin police recruit training after you meet the age and licence requirements.

Information for parents, guardians, and carers

The Career Starter Pathway helps young people build their confidence, maturity, and readiness before they become a police officer.

It is normal to wonder if a young person is ready for policing.

This supported pathway gives students time to learn about the job, understand the requirements, and receive support before they commit.

Pathway participants will be able to:

  • get guidance before and during the application process
  • ask questions about training, pay, shifts, and career options
  • learn what policing is really like before committing
  • complete recruit training before starting work as a police officer, if their application is successful.

We will be running special information sessions for students, parents, and guardians.

Should you have other questions about the program, you can email our Career Starter Support Team on CAREER-STARTERS-PROGRAM-MGR@police.vic.gov.au.

Who can apply for the Career Starter Pathway

During the application period, the pathway is open to:

  • 17-year-olds or 18-year-olds with a learner permit
  • 18-year-olds with a probationary licence who are still completing their schooling or have recently finished.

The target is 17–18-year-olds in secondary school (Year 12), however, we will still accept and consider applicants in this age group who are no longer in secondary school.

If you are already 19 years old

19-year-olds are not eligible to take part in the pathway.

However, if you're a 19-year-old you can apply to be a police officer through the normal recruitment process.

When you can apply for the Career Starter Pathway

Applications for the pathway opened on 14 September and run until 25 October 2026.

This extended period gives students extra time during the school holidays to apply for the pathway.
