Where to safely dispose of a machete

You can safely dispose of a machete from September 1 to November 30, 2025, at one of our Machete Safe Disposal Bins.

There are 45 safe disposal bins, installed at select police stations across metropolitan and regional Victoria.

A large blue metal bin, labelled Machete Safe Disposal Bin, sits outside a Victoria Police station. There is a large slitted opening at the top of the bin for machetes to be dropped into. The sign asks to 'Please remove any packaging before placing a machete in the bin' and advises there are 24/7 cameras monitoring.

Alternative machete disposal locations

If you are unable to travel to a machete disposal bin location, you can dispose of a machete over the counter at any police station.

How to safely transport a machete

If you are transporting a machete to a Machete Safe Disposal Bin you should:

  • insert the machete into a cannister or box
  • wrap the item in a towel, or,
  • shield the blade with cardboard and packing tape.

This will help to:

  • conceal the machete and minimise the risk of public fear or alarm
  • protect against accidental harm during transportation.

Using the machete disposal bins

Machete safe disposal bins are designed to accommodate machetes.

If you are unsure whether your bladed item is a ‘machete’ or another type of knife, but suspect it could be a machete, please dispose of the item into the machete disposal bin.

Machetes are to be placed inside the disposal bins only.

Do not put packaging in the bin. Take all packaging away with you and dispose of appropriately.
