Chief Commissioner Approvals

Learn about the requirements of Chief Commissioner Approvals to possess prohibited weapons.

A Chief Commissioner Approval to Possess Prohibited Weapons (CCP Approval) may be granted to individuals or organisations to engage in activities otherwise prohibited by the Control of Weapons Act 1990.

These activities may include:

  • manufacture, sale or purchase prohibited weapons and body armour
  • display or advertise prohibited weapons and body armour for sale.
  • possess, use, carry or transport prohibited weapons and body armour.

Seeking a CCP Approval

A CCP Approval can be granted to an individual or business. You need to apply to the Chief Commissioner of Police to seek an approval.

All CCP Approvals are subject to conditions. The Chief Commissioner may impose additional conditions or limitations that consider appropriate.

The Chief Commissioner may not extend approval to certain individuals or categories of people, including any person who is a prohibited person in accordance with the Firearms Act 1996.

A CCP Approval will be issued for a maximum of three years.

If you wish to make an individual application for a Chief Commissioner's Approval, you will need to complete the form in full and ensure you provide the following information:

  • Contact details
  • Proof of identity
  • Medical information

Note: if you answer yes to any of these questions you must provide information from your treating health professional outlining their familiarity with any condition/s that may impact your suitability to possess prohibited weapons.

  • If you have ever applied to the Chief Commissioner for a Prohibited Weapons Approval.
  • Declare that you can comply with safe storage requirements.
  • Documentation to support your reasons for seeking an approval.
  • If the applicant is under 18 years old, consent to apply must be provided by a person with parental responsibility.

Applications for an approval to be granted to a business or body corporate will need to include:

  • business details (e.g. ABN, ACN)
  • contact details
  • details of any nominated or responsible persons who will be accountable for the storage and day to day management of all items under this licence
  • completed Personal Information Forms for each nominated or responsible person
  • declaration that the applicant can satisfy storage requirements
  • reasons for applying for the approval, including documentation proving the applicant's need for involvement with a prohibited weapon or body armour

Cost of a CCP Approval

Fees for an approval are payable on application.

  • cheque or money order submitted with application, or
  • PayWay (a link will be sent to you by email when your application is received).

Fees for all licences, registrations and permits issued by the Licensing and Regulation Division are reviewed on 1 July each year in accordance with the Victoria Police (Fees and Charges) Regulations 2014. For the current fee schedule, see: Service fees and penalties.
