National Firearms Register

The National Firearms Register will create a central, national database for information about:

  • firearms
  • firearms owners, and
  • firearms licences.

The register will help Victoria Police and police agencies across the country keep the community safe from firearm-related harm.

About the National Firearms Register

The National Firearms Register will be a nationwide database for firearm-related information. It will provide a way to share near real-time, reliable information between Australian law enforcement agencies and governments.

The program aims to ensure that police and law enforcement have the information they need about firearms, when they need it.

National Firearms Register information

The National Firearms register will allow police officers and other law enforcement a quick access to:

  • secure information about firearms, firearms owners and licences
  • firearm tracing information across international and domestic borders
  • licence verification information
  • alerts and notifications about high-risk events
  • reporting about firearms trends.

When the National Firearms Register will start

The national register is expected to be active by mid-2028.

In the meantime, government and law enforcement agencies across Australia are working to improve their local registers and information systems.

Who manages the National Firearms Register

The development of the National Firearms Register is being managed by:

  • Department of Home Affairs
  • The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC)

Police and government agencies across the country are partners in the NFR program.

The ACIC will develop and operate the NFR’s central register.
