Digital firearms licence

Digital firearms licences are now available in Victoria.

A digital firearms licence is a secure way to display your firearms licence details on your mobile device.

The digital licence is stored securely in the digital wallet on the Service Victoria app. It connects directly to the Victoria Police Licensing and Registration System.

About digital firearms licences

A digital firearms licence displays your firearms licence information on your mobile phone.

It also displays your full licence conditions. These appear on the carrier document you receive with your plastic card when it is issued by the Licensing and Regulation Division (LRD).

Your plastic firearms licence card will still be sent to you when renewing or applying for a firearms licence.

Using your digital firearms licence

You can use your digital firearms licence to prove you are authorised to:

  • carry, use or possess firearms, and
  • purchase ammunition.

You'll also be able show the digital licence when you go to a firearms dealer, shooting range or club and when you're out hunting.

The benefits of the digital firearms licence

Benefits of the digital firearms licence include:

Check and share your firearm licence status

You can check and share your firearm licence status any time. Your licence information will be retrieved straight from the Victoria Police registry system.

Display your firearms licence status

A digital licence can display the status of a licence in real-time. The most common status is ‘current’.

However when a firearms licence is under renewal, the digital licence may also display as:

  • ‘current - pending renewal’ or
  • ‘awaiting payment’.

These are valid licence statuses and allow you to continue your licensed activities, even if the licence has expired.

Multiple firearms licences

You can add multiple firearms licences to your wallet. They will need to be added individually, and will not include:

  • junior licences
  • firearm dealers, and
  • corporate firearm licences.

Digital firearms licence security features

Your digital firearms licence security features are there to prevent someone using your digital licence for fraud.

The security features on your digital firearms licence include:

  • a hologram
  • a scannable QR code that expires every 2 minutes
  • a last refreshed date for the latest details pulled from Victoria Police database.

Verifying your digital firearms licence

Your digital firearms licence can be verified by scanning its QR code and confirming the information on your licence.

Digital firearms licence QR code

Your digital firearms licence is easily verified by scanning its QR code. It will connect directly to your record with Victoria Police.

Each QR code is unique and lasts 2 minutes. After that, you will need to refresh the code.

The QR code must be scanned using the Service Victoria app. A tick will appear to show your details are verified.

Information on your digital firearms licence

The person checking your digital firearms licence will also be able to view your details, including your:

  • licence category

There are several security features to help confirm that your licence is legitimate.

Get your digital firearms licence

Is the app and your information secure?

When you use your digital firearms licence, Service Victoria gets your information from the Victoria Police Licensing and Regulation Division (LRD) and sends it straight to your phone.

People who need to check your licence will do a visual check or scan a unique QR code that shows them real-time information. This means it would be very hard for anyone to forge a digital firearms licence.
