From 1 September 2025, machetes were classified as prohibited weapons in Victoria.
Machete ban conditions and penalties
It is illegal to own, use, carry, transport, sell, and buy machetes in Victoria, unless you are covered by an exemption or valid approval.
Possession without exemption or valid approval can lead to:
- up to 2 years in prison, or
- a fine of more than $48,000.
What is a machete?
A machete is a large broad-bladed cutting knife. These knives can vary in shape and size.
Machete exemptions
Exemptions allow people to keep, use, buy or sell a machete.
If you are covered by an exemption, it applies automatically. However, you must comply with all conditions and be able to show proof of eligibility if asked by police.
Information about machete exemptions can be found on vic.gov.au.
A full list of machete-related exemptions is listed in the Governor In Council Exemption Orders.
Applying for an approval
If an exemption doesn’t apply but you have a legitimate reason to keep or use machete, you can apply for Chief Commissioner of Police approval.
Permanent machete sales ban
There is a permanent ban on the sale of machetes in Victoria under Control of Weapons laws.
You cannot sell a machete in Victoria unless you have official approval from the Chief Commissioner of Police or are covered by an exemption.
Find more information for retailers on the sales ban on vic.gov.au.
How to safely hand in a machete at a police station
If you are transporting a machete to a police station you should:
- ensure that you meet the requirements for surrendering a prohibited weapon
- insert the machete into a cannister or box
- wrap the item in a towel, or
- shield the blade with cardboard and packing tape.
This will help to:
- conceal the machete and minimise the risk of public fear or alarm
- protect against accidental harm during transportation.
