If you are covered by an exemption, it applies automatically. However, you must comply with all conditions and be able to show proof of eligibility if asked by police.

A full list of machete-related exemptions is listed in the Governor In Council Exemption Orders.

Applying for an approval

How to safely hand in a machete at a police station

If you are transporting a machete to a police station you should:

  • ensure that you meet the requirements for surrendering a prohibited weapon
  • insert the machete into a cannister or box
  • wrap the item in a towel, or
  • shield the blade with cardboard and packing tape.

This will help to:

  • conceal the machete and minimise the risk of public fear or alarm
  • protect against accidental harm during transportation.
