When you will receive your licence renewal form
Victoria Police will send a renewal application to your postal address eight weeks before your licence expires.
Once you receive your renewal application
Complete your renewal application form and post it to:
Licensing and Regulation Division
GPO Box 2807
Melbourne VIC 3001
Pay for your renewal
The renewal application will include a payment notice. You must make payment before the expiry of your current licence.
You can make payment by:
- BPAY (using the details on the renewal form), or
- at any Westpac bank branch.
Have your photo taken
If you need to have your photo taken as part of your renewal, the renewal pack will include instructions about how to do this.
You must have your photo taken at an authorised photo point. To search for your nearest photo point, visit the VicRoads website.
Changes to the photo requirements
The Licensing Regulation Division (LRD) is introducing capability to reuse licence holders’ photos for up to 10 years for both Private Security and Firearms licences. As a result of this change, there is no requirement to take a photo upon every renewal of a licence.
Private security and firearms licence holders only require a new photo if:
- They are a new applicant to LRD
- Their current licence photo (regardless of whether the photo was taken for firearms or private security purposes) is older than 10 years
- They are transitioning from a junior to a full licence
Based on this change, payment notices will be issued requesting:
- payment and photo
- payment only, and
- photo only (this is called a ‘photo capture notice’)
If you do not need to pay and do not need a photo, your licence will be issued automatically once approved (i.e., primary producers).
This change is expected to commence on 5th August 2025. Please ensure you follow the relevant instructions on payment notices issued prior to this change.
For further information contact LRD through our online enquiry form.
When you will receive your licence
A new plastic licence will be sent to you by mail when the Licensing and Regulation Division has both:
- approved your application, and
- received your payment and photo.
