How to renew your private security licence or registration

When you will receive your licence or registration renewal form

Victoria Police will send a renewal application to your postal address eight weeks before your licence or registration expires.

Once you receive your renewal application

Complete your renewal application form and email it to the Licensing and Regulation Division at LRD@police.vic.gov.au.

You can also send it by post to:

Paying for your renewal

The renewal application will include a payment notice. You must make payment before the expiry of your current licence or registration.

You can make payment by:

  • BPAY (using the details on the renewal form), or
  • at any Westpac bank branch.

Having your photo taken

The renewal application will include instructions about having your photo taken.

You must have your photo taken at an authorised photo point. To search for your nearest photo point, visit the VicRoads websiteExternal Link .

When you will receive your licence or registration

A new plastic licence or registration will be sent to you by mail when the Licensing and Regulation Division has both:

  • approved your application, and
  • received your payment and photo.

To view the status of current applications, view the private security page.

  • Your renewal application will be sent to your postal address.

    You should receive the application 6-8 weeks before your licence or registration expires.

    If your licence or registration expires in less than four weeks and you have not received a renewal application, please email the Licensing and Regulation Division at LRD@police.vic.gov.au to request the application be re-sent.

    In your email, please confirm your:

    • licence or registration number
    • full name
    • current residential address
    • current postal address.
  • If your licence or registration expires in more than four weeks

    Please complete the online change of details form.

    When your licence or registration is due for renewal, a renewal application will be sent to your new address.

    If your licence or registration expires in less than four weeks

    Please email the Licensing and Regulation Division at LRD@police.vic.gov.au.

    In your email, please confirm:

    • your licence or registration number
    • your full name
    • your current residential address
    • your current postal address.
  • You can continue to work while you wait for your new licence or registration card if you have:

    • submitted your renewal application
    • made payment for your renewal application
    • had your photo taken at an authorised photo point.

    You should carry both:

    • your expired card
    • your receipt of payment notice or evidence of payment.

    If you've submitted a renewal application, your licence or registration will remain current. This is until the Chief Commissioner makes a decision in relation to the application. This is provided under sections 36(4) and 92(4) of the Private Security Act 2004.

    The licence or registration will appear on the public register as ‘current, pending renewal’. You or your employer can check the validity of your licence or registration. Visit the public register of licence, registration and permit holdersExternal Link .

  • Authorised photo points are located throughout Victoria. To search for your nearest photo point, visit the VicRoads websiteExternal Link .

    There may be exceptional circumstances where you can't attend an authorised photo point. In this case, you must:

    1. Follow the instructions in the Unable to attend a photo point in Victoria formExternal Link
    2. Send the completed form by post to:

      Melbourne VIC 3001

    The Unable to attend a photo point in Victoria form must be sent by post. It cannot be sent by email.

  • No. If your current licence has not expired, you do not need your fingerprints taken again.

  • If you are a visa holder, you must include evidence with your renewal application to show:

    • your visa type
    • conditions and
    • work rights.
  • If you have become an Australian permanent resident or citizen during the term of your licence or registration, you must provide evidence with your renewal application.

  • The renewal fee consists of two parts:

    • the administration fee and
    • the licence or registration fee.

    The fee schedule is available on service fees and penalties page.

    If your application is abandoned, withdrawn or refused:

    • the administration fee cannot be refunded
    • you can request a refund of the licence or registration fee.

    If you re-apply after your application is abandoned, withdrawn or refused:

    • you will have to pay the administration fee again
    • you will have to pay a licence or registration fee again if it was refunded.
  • If your licence expires

    If your current licence or registration expires, you will become unlicensed/unregistered.

    You are unable to carry out licence or registration activities.

    Getting a new licence or registration card

    To get a new licence or registration card, you must apply for a new private security licence or registration.

    You cannot perform licence or registration activities until you receive your new licence or registration card.

  • Please state on your renewal application form if you want to add or remove activities from your licence or registration.

    You must also provide a certified statement of results for training, relevant to the activities you are applying to be licensed for.

    Adding an activity may result in an extra fee.
